Choosing
your specialist professional area of social work.
By

or post graduate route into the social work profession. Through
your course, placement and any previous employment or voluntary
experience you may have some idea of what direction you would
like your professional career to take. Local Authorities will
have some vacancies across all areas of the profession. Some
areas will require post qualifying experience and even post
qualifying professional development qualifications.
Job
application forms and job specifications give you the best
idea of what will be suitable to your experience and skills.
Analyse your skills, experience, personal qualities and strengths.
Be aware of your learning needs and areas of the profession
you feel you do not want to work in. have some idea of what
locality you want to work in, how far do feel able to travel
to work for example.
Research
your preferred Local Authorities. Make yourself aware of their
recruitment packages for graduates. This will ensure you are
able to ask the right questions about the levels of supervision
they offer, continuing professional development and any opportunities
available for relocation and incentive schemes such as “Golden
Handshakes”.
Nerves
on the day of interview can be combated by thorough preparation.
Have some questions ready, dress smartly but make sure you
are comfortable. Prepare your CV and be prepared to answer
questions responding to the job specification. Also polish
up on your knowledge of the latest developments in policy,
practice and legislation.
